Laser cataract surgery

Bladeless precision with LENSAR ALLY and LenSx

For the most delicate steps of cataract surgery, Dr. Kavanagh uses a femtosecond laser guided by a 3D scan of your eye. The laser performs each step with computer-controlled, micron-level accuracy.

  1. CapsulotomyA perfectly round, centered opening in the lens capsule, so your new lens implant sits exactly where it should.
  2. Breaking up and softening the cataractThe laser divides and softens the cataract first, so less ultrasound energy is needed to remove it.
  3. Correcting corneal astigmatismPrecise arcuate incisions reduce astigmatism, aligned to your eye with iris registration.

Glaucoma treatment, from first step to advanced

  1. DropsDaily pressure-lowering eye drops.
  2. SLT laserA quick in-office laser that improves drainage, often reducing drops.
  3. Drug implantsDurysta and iDose TR release medication inside the eye for months or longer.
  4. MIGSiStent infinite, Hydrus, AlloFlo and the XEN Gel Stent, often placed during cataract surgery.

Questions

San Antonio patients often ask

Which San Antonio office should I choose?

Pick the one closest to home. The Medical Center office is on Wurzbach Rd, North Central is on Classen Rd near Stone Oak, and the South office is on Palo Alto Rd. Call 830-379-3937 and the team will book you at any of the three.

How long does cataract surgery take?

The procedure itself usually takes 10 to 20 minutes and is done as an outpatient, so you go home the same day. Many patients notice clearer vision within a few days.

What is MIGS, and am I a candidate?

MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery) uses tiny implants or micro-incisions to improve the eye's natural drainage. It is often combined with cataract surgery and can reduce the need for daily drops. A glaucoma exam will show whether it fits your eyes.

Can I see Dr. Kavanagh's surgery before mine?

Yes. The Eye Associates of South Texas YouTube channel has close to 30,000 subscribers and shows real cataract and glaucoma procedures, explained step by step.
